Rotary International and Rotary Districts

Rotary has an International Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. The governing structure provides for an International President, other officers, and a Board of Directors.

The Rotary world is divided into approximately 500 districts. The top person in each district is the District Governor, or "DG", who is elected for a one year term. The DG is responsible for administration within the district and for the implementation of all district programs and projects. Most districts have between 45 and 70 clubs. The Elk River Rotary Club is part of District 5960. Each club is governed by a President, other officers, and a Board of Directors.

Each Rotarian is a member of a Rotary Club. Membership is open to both men and women. A person must be sponsored by a club member. Rotary is organized on what is called a "classification basis". That is, there is one member representing each business or profession.

A person who has been a member for 15 years is automatically "upgraded" to Senior Active status. This opens up his or her classification for a new member.
